In Geneva, most lost items are handled by the cantonal lost property office (called Service des objets trouvés). It’s a centralized system, which is actually quite efficient compared to many countries.
Whether you lose your phone, wallet, keys, or even documents, chances are it will eventually end up there if someone hands it in.
- Items found by the police or on public transport (TPG) are sent to this central office
- If the owner can be identified, they may even try to contact you directly
- You can also file a report online so they can match your item faster
📍 Location: Rue des Glacis-de-Rive 5 (near Rive)
🕒 Opening hours: Monday–Friday, 08:00–12:00 & 13:30–16:00
💡 Good To Know: You usually have to pay to get your item back
This is where many people are surprised.
- There is always a minimum fee of CHF 10
- The final cost can sometime depend on the value and size of the item
It’s not a fine—it’s more of a handling and processing fee.
🚆 What if I lose cash? A Swiss twist: SBB & found money
According to this article, if money is handed in at Swiss Federal Railways (SBB):
- It may be treated as belonging to the system handling it
- You should not assume it will be returned in the same way as through the cantonal lost & found
🪪 Lost ID or driver’s license (important!)
This is a special case,
- The lost and found office will NOT return identity documents (ID, residence permit, driver’s license)
- Instead, you must request an attestation (certificate of loss)
- Cost: CHF 40
- This document allows you to apply for a replacement (e.g. via your consulate if you’re a foreigner)
🏷️ What happens to unclaimed items?
Of course, lost items are not kept forever. If they are not claimed, they are eventually sold at public auctions: https://fundsachenverkauf.ch
You can find:
- Bikes
- Electronics
- Even cars
Geneva also participates in this system.
- Items are held for a legal period
- Then sold if no one claims them
- Happen multiple times throughout the year
- Don’t follow a strict public schedule
- Are often announced informally on their Facebook page
🔎 What to do if you lost something
- Report
- Service des objets trouvés
- Filing a report helps them match your item faster
- Good To Know: Items often take time to arrive (1-2 days) at the central office.
- Check Online
- Check their gallery of lost items found in the canton before going and waiting in line at the central office. 👉 Check out their Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/objetstrouvesGE
- Join the Lost&Found WhatsApp group created by your kind local & expat community
- Go in person if needed
Bring:- ID
- Description / proof (photos, receipts, IMEI, etc.)
🚋 Where you lost it matters
- Public transport (bus/tram) → ends up at the central office the next day
- Police station → kept briefly, then forwarded to the same office
- Airport → handled separately at first, then may be transferred (GVA Genève Aéroport)
🤝 If you find something
- Drop it at the lost property office
- Give it to a police station
- Hand it to a TPG driver if found on transport
Geneva’s lost & found system is a mix of efficiency, patience, and a little bit of mystery when it comes to fees—but overall, it works.
And behind every recovered item, there’s usually a quiet act of kindness from someone who decided to pick something up and help it find its way home.
And if you’re a parent reading this…may you never need this guide—but if you do, may it help reunite not just your belongings, but that one irreplaceable, slightly worn, deeply loved doudou 🧸Because somehow, those are always the items with the highest emotional value and the lowest official “estimated worth.”
