Whether you’ve just welcomed an energetic puppy into the family, adopted an older rescue, or are simply trying to survive the “selective hearing” phase, finding the right dog trainer can make all the difference.
The good news? Geneva and its neighbouring areas have plenty of fantastic trainers and clubs, ranging from puppy socialisation and group classes to behavioural support and private coaching. And contrary to popular belief, dog training isn’t just about teaching your dog to sit or stay — it’s also about helping us humans better understand how to communicate with them.
As fellow dog owner of a very stubborn (but oh-so-cute chonk) corgi, I understand that every dog is different. What works for one pup may not work for another, so don’t be afraid to try a few approaches until you find the right fit.

Before We Begin: Geneva’s Mandatory Dog Training
If you’re new to Geneva, it’s worth noting that owners of certain larger dogs are required to complete the TMC (Test de Maîtrise et de Comportement).
That said, many local dog owners recommend these courses regardless of breed size. Whether your dog weighs 4kg or 40kg, the fundamentals remain the same: recall, leash manners, impulse control and learning how to communicate with one another.
Good to know:
- The TMC is a Geneva cantonal requirement, not a Swiss-wide requirement and not a French requirement. Whether you must complete it depends primarily on where the dog is registered and where the owner resides, not where the training school is located.
- If you are a Geneva resident and your dog falls into the category requiring a TMC, you must complete the process through a trainer recognized by the Canton of Geneva. The canton maintains an official list of approved trainers and evaluators (*list below).
- If you live in France 🇫🇷 (Ferney, Gex, Saint-Julien, Annemasse, etc.): there is no equivalent to Geneva’s TMC requirement for ordinary pet dogs in neighbouring France. France has different regulations, and the mandatory training requirements generally apply only to certain legally classified dogs (“chiens catégorisés”), not to the average family Labrador, Golden Retriever, Corgi, etc.
*The official list of approved Geneva trainers can be found here.
Many trainers on this list also offer private lessons and group classes.
Note: Prices, packages and training formats were accurate at the time of publishing (2026). As offerings can change, we recommend reaching out to trainers directly for the latest information and availability. 🐾

At the end of the day, dog training isn’t about having the “perfect” dog. It’s about building trust, understanding one another a little better, and making everyday life more enjoyable—whether that’s walking calmly through Carouge market, hiking in the Jura, or finally being able to call your dog’s name without having to wave a piece of Gruyère in the air.
And if your dog currently only responds when cheese is involved?
No judgement here. We’ve all been there. 🧀🐾
