When moving here, nobody warned me about Geneva in a heatwave. 🫠
As an expat from Asia, where air-conditioning is basically a human right, you can walk into a mall, a café, a convenience store, a public restroom, and feel that immediate wall of cold air. It’s just there. A given. Part of the social contract.
Geneva did not sign that contract.
What Geneva did give me was tram 12, a glass-and-metal heat trap on wheels and the dawning realization that AC here is not a standard feature. It’s a find.
So we found some. Here’s where to go:
Libraries
Library Uni Mail Yes, it’s part of the university but it’s cool, quiet, and filled with students & locals finding a cooling place to study but mostly just melting like the rest of us. There’s Wi-Fi, calm energy, and yes—AC (or at least very efficient fans and ventilation).

Bars, Cafés & Restaurants
Hot tip: Always walk in first before committing to a table. If your skin tingles from the fresh A/C, it’s a winner. If your glasses fog up from the inside when you enter, turn and run.
- Starbucks: Yes, it’s basic. But it’s cold.
- Utopia Cornavin: Newly opened at Cornavin, just across from Oh Martine. It’s confirmed they do have AC, making it a great place to hang and maybe get some work done.
- Calico (St Gervais) Another café option with AC and amazing coffee.
- Le Brise Glace (Paquis)The perfect spot for board game lovers. Or if you just need a cold drink and some cold air.
- Gaya (Paquis) Can confirm they have proper AC units AND cold noodles inside.
- Tehran Lake (Paquis) Reader submission of this amazing Iranian restaurant with good vegetarian choices.
- Grand Duke Pub (Paquis) This is the spot if you’re looking for a cool pub and some cold beer to boot.
- Hinivuu (Nations): The café inside the Red Cross Museum has been validated to have AC by a reader.
- Melrose Kitchen (Eaux-vives) Refreshing matchas & açai bowls in cold AC, my personal favorite combo
- Overflow Studio (Eaux-Vives) Another reader submission, confirmed to be nice and cool inside this café!
- Luigia (Eaux-Vives) Pizza, pasta, and AC. Can’t think of a better combo.
- Restaurant Migros (Inside Balexert) The angels started singing when I walked into Balexert during the heatwave. Restaurant Migros has outlets and seems to be a good option to hangout and get some light work done.
- Gran Caffè Royal Karoma (Eaux-Vives)
“They have A/C, great food, and lovely staff. Perfect for escaping the heat! 😊🌡️”
- Tita Dimps (Servette) A Filipino restaurant fan favorite, serving sisig, lechon, adobo, and halo-halo in a cozy spot that also happens to be air-conditioned.

- Gelateria Fiordilatte (Pâquis)
- Gelato Mania (Multiple locations)
- Gelateria La Gelosa (Old Town)

Malls & Department Stores
- Manor Geneva – Three floors of glorious, commercial-grade cooling.
- Globus – Geneva glam fridge.
- Coop City Plainpalais – Perfect place to browse and escape the heat!
- Bongénie – Designer heaven and air-conditioned.
- Confédération Centre – Careful, they don’t blast the A/C in here (speaking from experience), but it’s a solid option for a slow, aimless wander through a well-stocked mall where the temperature is at least bearable and the options are plentiful.
- Eaux Vives Centre Commercial
There’s a Poke place and Boréal coffee seating in the main mall and free wifi from décathlon, nobody bothers you there!
- Balexert Shopping Centre – A bit out of the city center but 100% worth the tram ride
- Quartier de l’Étang (Châtelaine-Vernier) – Part mall, part activity centre. Between Le Royale buffet, the ever-popular TOTEM Le Môll for the big & small kids, VR experiences, laser games, arcades, and seven escape rooms, you can easily lose a whole afternoon in here without once stepping back into the heat.

- LIDL (Our personal fave) & Denner: Budget-friendly, not overcrowded, and YES, she’s got air-conditioning.
- COOP & Migros: They don’t blast the AC but they definitely cool you down.
- Uchitomi – Geneva’s Japanese grocery goddess.

IKEA (Vernier) Go for the meatballs, stay for the climate-controlled bliss. Bonus: Buy a fan while you’re there. Or seven.
When All Else Fails – Just Jump In a Lake
Lake Geneva (Lac Léman, if we’re being bougie) is cold year-round. Pack a swimsuit, head to Bain des Pâquis, and go for a dip.
PS: Don’t forget your SPF. We’re cooling off, not frying.
Hot Tip: Bring some coins / cash as there’s a 2CHF fee at the entrance during the summer.
