We’re officially in summer territory now—as if you needed reminding given the hot temperatures we’ve already been experiencing! Summer transforms Geneva into a lively, bonafide lake town, a complete 180 from the winter months. It’s always amazing to see so many people out and about, but honestly, that’s exactly where you want (and should) be.

June marks the true start of the season, packed with open-air markets, outdoor festivals, and live music throughout the month. Make sure to check out our dedicated post on vide-greniers (second-hand markets) that are still happening through the summer months. If you’re looking to dive deeper into summer mode, check out our guides on the best places to swim in Geneva, where to BBQ in the city, and even where to find AC (for those inevitable heat waves to come).

Another lesser-known tradition taking place this month is the alpine cattle ascent. While the autumn descents (désalpes) get the grand, commercial spotlight, the cows have to head up the mountains first! These ascents are much smaller, intimate events centered around individual local farms rather than coordinated, region-wide festivals. Because they depend entirely on grass conditions and high-mountain weather, exact dates are usually finalized just a week or two in advance. If you’re keen to catch one, keep an eye on regional tourism boards (like Saas-Fee). My advice would be to plan a scenic hike in the area for the day; that way, you get a beautiful day in nature, and crossing paths with the herd is just the cherry on the top.
