The happiest of flowers are such an iconic part of Switzerland’s summer landscape, and if you’re like us, you’re itching to find them and see them up close. 

If you’re searching for a magical map with all their exact locations, I’m sorry to disappoint. Unlike other popular blooms (like cherry blossoms or narcissus) that pop up in the same spots year after year, chasing sunflowers is a bit like chasing a beautiful mirage. Farmers rotate their crops annually, so that stunning field you found last year might have transformed into wheat this season. The upside? No influencers crowding the space, trying to take same instagram shot – you’ll often get sunflower fields to yourself!

Decoding the Sunflower Season: When & Where to Start Your Search

📅 When is it? Traditionally, sunflower fields around Geneva are usually blooming from July to early August. However, the exact peak really depends on the weather. With the insane heat wave we just had means that many of the sunflowers have already started blooming!

📍What areas am I looking for? Lest we forget that sunflowers are farm crops, you’ll need to target your search to agricultural areas – think south and west of the city. Hotspots where we’ve seen them appear in past years include the regions around Jussy, Soral, Bernex, Avusy, Pregny-Chambésy, Collex Bossy, Confignon, and Satigny/Dardagny on the right bank. These are the areas where you’ll find large, open fields perfect for growing sunflowers. There are many, many sunflower fields out there!

Best Way To Track Sunflowers

🚲 Bike is king for discovery 

Sometimes the best discoveries are made by serendipitous accidents. My preferred method of searching for sunflowers is on a bike! Being on two wheels makes it easier to explore the smaller country roads and gives you greater access and flexibility. Plus, being on a bike is also just an amazing way to explore the Geneva countryside – sunflowers or not!

🔍 Check Google Earth Views

Before heading out, we recommend taking a quick look at Google Earth. You’ll often see big open fields or even large patches of bright yellow – those areas are where you should head to! While the images aren’t real-time, they will show the date of the photos taken, so you’ll have a reference. You can also use Google Maps, switch to satellite view and zoom into the areas we mentioned (it just lacks the dates)

Keep in mind that satellite images aren’t always real-time or even updated frequently. But it gives you a better idea of what areas to target for your on-the-ground journey.

💬 Ask a friend, locals, or strangers online

Don’t underestimate the power of local knowledge! If you have a friend that lives in the suburbs of Geneva, chances are, they see sunflower fields every day on their commute. Sunflower enthusiasts will often share their photos on the local subreddits and Facebook groups – don’t be shy to politely ask for a general location.
